Ceiling Fan Installation on the Mornington Peninsula โ Cost, Tips & What to Expect
June 9, 2026 ย ยทย Impulse Electrical Contractors
Summers on the Mornington Peninsula can get hot โ and while the sea breeze helps, there's nothing quite like a ceiling fan running overhead when it doesn't. Ceiling fans are one of the most popular and cost-effective ways to cool a room, and they use a fraction of the electricity that a split-system air conditioner does.
We install ceiling fans right across the Peninsula โ from Mount Eliza to Portsea โ and it's one of our most common summer jobs. Here's everything you need to know about cost, what's involved, and how to choose the right fan.
Why Ceiling Fans Make Sense on the Peninsula
The Mornington Peninsula's climate is a classic coastal Melbourne pattern: hot northerly days in summer, often followed by a cool change. Ceiling fans are perfect for:
- โ Circulating the sea breeze through open windows on mild days
- โ Providing low-energy cooling on hot days when you want to avoid running AC
- โ Reversing in winter to push warm air down from high ceilings (common in older Peninsula homes)
- โ Covered alfresco areas and verandahs โ outdoor-rated fans are excellent in coastal conditions
Ceiling Fan Installation โ What Affects the Cost
Installation costs vary depending on your situation. The main factors are:
- โ Whether a ceiling outlet already exists (replacing a light) or new wiring is required
- โ Whether a separate light kit needs to be wired in
- โ Indoor vs outdoor / alfresco installation (outdoor requires IP-rated fittings)
- โ Number of fans โ installing multiple fans on the same visit is more cost-effective
- โ Ceiling height and access requirements

Do You Need a Licensed Electrician to Install a Ceiling Fan?
Yes โ in Victoria, ceiling fan installation is electrical work and must be done by a licensed electrician. This applies even if you're replacing an existing fan. The reason is simple: you're connecting to the 240V mains supply, and that's restricted work under the Electricity Safety Act.
We occasionally get calls from homeowners who've tried to DIY a ceiling fan and ended up with incorrect wiring โ the fan spinning the wrong way, the light not working, or an unsafe connection. It's not worth the risk. A licensed electrician has the job done properly in under an hour, and you get a Certificate of Electrical Safety.
Best Placement for Ceiling Fans
Ceiling Height Matters
Fan blades should ideally be at least 2.1 metres above the floor for safety and efficiency. Most Peninsula homes have standard 2.4โ2.7m ceilings โ perfect for a standard fan with a short downrod. Older Federation-style homes with high ceilings (3m+) may need a longer downrod to bring the fan to the optimal height.
Room Size and Fan Size
Bigger rooms need bigger fans. Here's a rough guide:
- ๐ Up to 12mยฒ: 90cm (36") fan
- ๐ 12โ20mยฒ: 105โ120cm (42โ48") fan
- ๐ 20โ35mยฒ: 130โ140cm (52โ56") fan
- ๐ Over 35mยฒ: 150cm+ (60") fan or two smaller fans
Outdoor / Alfresco Areas
Outdoor fans on the Peninsula need to be IP-rated (Ingress Protection) for outdoor use โ at least IP23, and ideally IP44 or higher for coastal areas near salt air (think Sorrento, Portsea, Safety Beach). Make sure the fan you choose is rated for outdoor use before purchasing. We can advise on suitable options.
Brands Worth Considering
We install a wide range of fans, but here are some that get consistently good feedback from Peninsula homeowners:
- โญ Hunter Pacific โ Australian-designed, good range of DC motor fans with low running costs
- โญ Fanco โ great value DC fans with remote and timer options
- โญ Brilliant Lighting โ solid mid-range with good selection of fan+light combos
- โญ Mercator โ popular outdoor range with IP ratings suitable for coastal use
- โญ Big Ass Fans (Haiku) โ premium WiFi/smart fans for larger spaces or high ceilings
DC motor fans use significantly less electricity than AC motor fans โ typically 15โ35W vs 60โ75W. If you're running the fan for hours each day in summer, DC is the better long-term investment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ceiling fan installation take?
Installing a fan to an existing ceiling outlet typically takes 45โ90 minutes. If new wiring is required (running cable from the switchboard or from an adjacent point), allow 2โ3 hours.
Can a ceiling fan be installed on a vaulted or raked ceiling?
Yes โ many Peninsula homes have raked ceilings, particularly in newer builds or renovated fibro homes. It requires a special angled canopy bracket. We carry these โ just let us know when you book.
Can I use my ceiling fan in winter?
Absolutely. Run the fan on its lowest setting in reverse (clockwise when viewed from below) and it gently pushes warm air from near the ceiling back down into the room. Great for old Peninsula homes with high ceilings that lose warmth upward.
Do I need to supply the fan or can you?
Either way works. Many customers prefer to choose and purchase their own fan from Bunnings, Harvey Norman, or a lighting specialist โ we install it. We can also source and supply a fan for you if you'd prefer a one-stop service. Just let us know.
