Are LED Downlights Worth It? A Mornington Peninsula Electrician's Honest Take

June 9, 2026 ย ยทย  Impulse Electrical Contractors

Every week we get asked: "Are LED downlights actually worth the money?" Honest answer: yes โ€” but with some important caveats. As a Peninsula-based electrician who's upgraded hundreds of homes from halogen to LED, here's the real picture on cost, savings, and what actually matters.

Whether you're in a 1990s brick veneer in Mornington, a new build in Mount Martha, or a renovated holiday house in Sorrento, this applies to you.

Halogen vs LED โ€” The Honest Comparison

Energy Use

A typical 50W halogen downlight uses โ€” wait for it โ€” 50W. A replacement LED delivers the same light output (or better) for 6โ€“10W. That's an 80โ€“85% reduction in electricity for each fitting. In a home with 16 downlights, that's the difference between 800W and 128W while the lights are on.

Lifespan

Halogens typically last 2,000โ€“4,000 hours before blowing. Good quality LEDs last 25,000โ€“50,000 hours. At 4 hours a day, that's 17โ€“34 years for an LED versus 1โ€“3 years for a halogen. No more standing on a ladder every few months.

Heat Output

Halogens run extremely hot โ€” they're a fire risk in roof spaces and can cause discomfort directly below them. LEDs run cool. This matters a lot for Peninsula homes with insulation in the roof space.

What's Involved in an LED Downlight Upgrade?

The cost of an LED downlight upgrade depends on factors like the number of lights, whether existing fittings can be swapped in-place, and whether new wiring or transformers are required. Every home is a little different.

ROI โ€” The Real Picture

Let's look at the efficiency for a typical Peninsula 3-bedroom home with 16 halogen downlights:

The energy savings typically pay back the upgrade cost within a few years โ€” then you're saving on electricity indefinitely. The exact payback period depends on your usage and the number of lights. Call us on 0418 383 232 for a free quote and we can give you a realistic picture for your home.

IC-Rated vs Non-IC โ€” The Fire Safety Issue

This is the part most homeowners don't know about, and it's important. Downlights installed in a ceiling with insulation above them need to be IC-rated (Insulation Contact rated) โ€” meaning they're designed to be covered by insulation without overheating.

Non-IC halogens under insulation are a fire risk. The insulation holds heat in, and the halogen runs hot enough to ignite surrounding materials. We've seen the damage first-hand on the Peninsula.

When we upgrade to LED, we always use IC-rated fittings where insulation is present. Good quality IC-rated LEDs run cool enough that they can be safely covered. If your home has insulation and non-IC downlights (very common in Peninsula homes), upgrading to IC-rated LEDs is a safety upgrade as much as an efficiency one.

Colour Temperature โ€” Getting the Feel Right

LED downlights come in different colour temperatures, measured in Kelvin (K):

Most Peninsula homes we work in use 2700K for living areas and bedrooms, and 3000K for kitchens and bathrooms. We'll discuss your preferences before installing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace halogen downlights with LED myself?

Legally, no โ€” it's electrical work requiring a licensed electrician in Victoria. Even "plug-in" MR16 LED retrofits involve working with low-voltage transformers and potentially the 240V circuit. Beyond legality, incorrect installation creates fire and shock risks. Our installation cost is low enough that it's not worth the risk.

What brand LED downlights do you use?

We use quality LED fittings from established suppliers โ€” we don't use cheap imported fittings that fail quickly. Brands we trust include Verbatim, Gentech, Telbix, and Robus. We're happy to discuss options and why we choose what we choose.

Can I dim LED downlights?

Yes โ€” but only if you choose dimmable LEDs and have a compatible LED dimmer switch. Not all dimmers work with all LEDs. If you want dimming, tell us when booking so we can ensure the right combination. We'll also check your existing dimmer switches and advise if they need replacing.

How many downlights does a room need?

A rough rule: 1 downlight per 1โ€“1.5 square metres of floor area for a well-lit room. A 20mยฒ living room typically needs 14โ€“20 lights depending on lumen output. We'll advise the right number and layout for your space.
