Power Outage on the Mornington Peninsula? Here's What to Check
July 4, 2026 ย ยทย Impulse Electrical Contractors
You've just lost power โ the lights are out, the fridge has stopped humming, and everything's gone dark. Whether it's a single room, your whole house, or your whole street, a power outage on the Mornington Peninsula can have several very different causes. Getting the diagnosis right is the first step to getting it fixed fast.
As local electricians based in Dromana, we handle fault-finding and emergency electrical calls across the entire Peninsula โ from Frankston and Mornington down to Rosebud, Rye, Blairgowrie, and Portsea. Here's a systematic guide to working out why you've got no power, and what to do next.
Step 1: Is It Just Your House, or the Whole Street?
Before you do anything else, look outside. If your neighbours' homes are also dark, this is a network outage โ a problem with the distribution network, not your internal wiring. On the Mornington Peninsula, the network is managed by United Energy (which covers most of the Peninsula from Frankston south) and AusNet Services (northern and eastern parts).
What to do in a network outage:
- โ Check United Energy's outage map at unitedenergy.com.au or call 13 22 09
- โ Check AusNet's outage map at ausnetservices.com.au or call 13 17 99
- โ Do NOT call your electrician โ this is a network issue, not an internal fault
- โ Keep your switchboard off until power is restored to avoid surge damage
- โ Unplug sensitive electronics (TVs, computers) to protect against restoration surges
Summer storms and strong winds are common outage triggers on the Peninsula โ particularly in the exposed coastal areas around Rye, Blairgowrie, and Portsea. In winter, easterly gales can bring branches down on lines near Arthurs Seat and Red Hill. These events can affect hundreds of homes at once.
Step 2: Check Your Switchboard
If the street has power but your house doesn't, head to your switchboard. This is usually found in the laundry, garage, or on an external wall. Look for:
- ๐ A circuit breaker or safety switch that has tripped to the 'OFF' or middle position
- ๐ A main switch that has tripped
- ๐ Ceramic fuses (in older homes) that have blown
If a breaker has tripped, reset it by pushing it firmly to OFF then back to ON. If it immediately trips again, there is a fault on that circuit โ do not keep resetting it. You need a licensed electrician to find and fix the fault before that circuit is safe to use.
Step 3: Why Did the Safety Switch (RCD) Trip?
Safety switches (RCDs) are designed to trip the moment they detect current leaking to earth โ which typically means a faulty appliance or a wiring fault. This is a safety system working as designed. The tricky part is finding what caused the trip.
Common causes of safety switch trips on the Peninsula:
- โก A faulty appliance โ often a washing machine, dishwasher, kettle, or power tool
- โก Moisture in outdoor lights, garden power points, or pool equipment
- โก A damaged extension cord or surge-damaged appliance after a storm
- โก Wiring fault โ especially in older homes with degraded cable insulation
- โก A fault in a hardwired appliance like a hot water system or oven
To find the culprit: unplug everything on the affected circuit, reset the safety switch, then plug appliances back in one at a time until it trips again. The last appliance you plugged in before it tripped is likely faulty โ don't use it and have it tested or replaced.
Step 4: Partial Power Loss โ Why Does Only Part of My House Have Power?
If some circuits are working but others aren't, this can indicate a tripped individual circuit breaker, a blown fuse on an older board, or (less commonly) a fault with the mains supply where only one phase is affected. Peninsula homes are single-phase, so partial power usually points to individual circuit issues โ but it can sometimes be a service fuse fault.
Service fuse faults (the fuse on the pole or pit before your meter) require your network provider โ United Energy or AusNet โ not your electrician. But an internal fault causing partial power loss requires a licensed electrician to diagnose and fix.
When to Call an Emergency Electrician
Call us immediately if you have:
- ๐จ Total loss of power with no obvious cause at the switchboard
- ๐จ A burning smell anywhere in the house โ switchboard, walls, or outlets
- ๐จ Scorch marks or black discolouration around power points or switches
- ๐จ A safety switch that keeps tripping and you can't isolate the cause
- ๐จ Power loss after a storm and you can see or suspect physical damage
- ๐จ Any sparking, arcing, or buzzing sounds from wiring or the switchboard
- ๐จ Power loss affecting medical equipment or essential life-safety systems
Electrical faults can escalate quickly. A smouldering fault inside a wall cavity can take hours to become a fire โ by which time it may be too late. We offer fault-finding callouts across the Peninsula and can typically attend the same day for urgent issues.
Fault-Finding: What Does an Electrician Do?
When we arrive for a fault-finding job, we use a systematic process to isolate the problem. This typically involves testing circuits with an insulation resistance tester (Megger), identifying leakage points, tracing cable runs, and checking connections at power points, switches, and the switchboard itself.
On older Peninsula homes โ particularly the fibro and weatherboard properties common in Rosebud, Rye, and Frankston South โ we often find that the fault is degraded cable insulation rather than a single appliance or connection. In these cases, the fix may involve partial or full rewiring rather than a simple repair.
We always give you a clear explanation of what we found, what needs to be done, and the cost before proceeding with any remediation work. No surprises.
Storm Damage and Power Restoration
The Mornington Peninsula is no stranger to damaging storms โ summer thunderstorms, winter gales off Western Port, and autumn wind events regularly cause outages across the region. After a major storm, here's how to safely restore power:
- โ ๏ธ Wait for United Energy or AusNet to confirm the network is restored before resetting your switchboard
- โ ๏ธ Visually inspect the switchboard before turning it back on โ look for water ingress or physical damage
- โ ๏ธ If there are signs of lightning strike (burn marks, damaged equipment), have an electrician inspect before re-energising
- โ ๏ธ Replace any appliances that were on during the storm and now malfunction โ power surges can damage internal components in ways that aren't immediately obvious
- โ ๏ธ Check outdoor power points, garden lighting, and pool equipment after heavy rain โ moisture ingress is a common post-storm fault
Frequently Asked Questions
I have no power but my switchboard looks fine โ what's going on?
If all breakers are in the ON position and the main switch is on, the problem may be with the service fuse (on the pole or in the pit) or the meter. This is network territory โ call United Energy on 13 22 09 or AusNet on 13 17 99. Do not attempt to access the meter box yourself.
My safety switch keeps tripping โ can I just tape it in the ON position?
Absolutely not. The safety switch is tripping because it's detecting a real fault โ overriding it defeats the entire purpose and creates a serious electrocution and fire risk. Have the circuit inspected by a licensed electrician to find and fix the underlying fault.
How much does fault-finding cost on the Mornington Peninsula?
Fault-finding callouts vary depending on complexity โ simple fault isolation (finding a tripped breaker cause) may take an hour or two, while tracking down a wiring fault in an older home may take half a day. We charge fair, transparent hourly rates and will always give you an assessment before committing to extended diagnostic work. Call us on 0418 383 232 for current rates.
Is it safe to use candles during a power outage?
Candles are a significant fire risk. Use battery-powered LED torches or lanterns instead โ they're safer and more practical. Keep a torch in an accessible place so you're never caught without light.
