When Should You Upgrade Your Switchboard? (Mornington Peninsula Guide)
March 15, 2025 ย ยทย Impulse Electrical Contractors
If you live in an older home on the Mornington Peninsula, chances are your switchboard is working harder than it was ever designed to. The Peninsula has a huge number of homes built in the 1960s, 70s and 80s โ many of which still have the original ceramic fuse switchboard.
These were fine when a household had a TV, a fridge and a few lights. In 2025, with air conditioning, EV chargers, dishwashers, and multiple devices on every circuit, they're simply not up to the job.
Warning Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading
1. You have ceramic fuses (not circuit breakers)
If your switchboard has ceramic fuses โ the screw-in type that you replace with wire when they blow โ it's time for an upgrade. Modern circuit breakers trip automatically and reset at the press of a button. Ceramic fuses are slower to react to faults and create a risk of fire if the wrong fuse wire is used.
2. No safety switches (RCDs)
In Victoria, safety switches are required on all new installations. But many older homes don't have them. A safety switch cuts power in milliseconds if it detects a fault โ potentially saving your life. If your switchboard doesn't have safety switches, you're not adequately protected.
3. Fuses blow frequently
If your fuses blow or your circuit breakers trip regularly, it's a sign your circuits are overloaded. This is common in older homes that weren't designed for modern appliances. An upgrade means new circuits and proper load distribution.
4. You're renovating or adding new appliances
Adding an EV charger, a second air conditioner, a spa or a new kitchen? These all require dedicated circuits with adequate capacity. If your switchboard is old, now's the time to upgrade it as part of the renovation.
5. Your switchboard is hot or smells of burning
If you can feel heat coming from your switchboard, or notice a burning smell, call an electrician immediately. This is a fire risk and should be treated as an emergency.
