Call 0418 383 232Dromana’s older beach houses and renovated foreshore homes often still run halogen downlights installed in the 1990s and 2000s, while the newer estates on the hill have builder-grade LEDs that were never laid out for the way the rooms are used. Replacing halogens, and re-planning the layout while we are there, is one of the most common lighting jobs in our home suburb.
Modern LED downlights improve brightness, reduce running costs and remove the heat problems associated with old halogen fittings. We install new LED downlights, replace halogens, upgrade drivers, set out lighting evenly and fit dimmer-compatible products where requested. Correct clearances, insulation ratings and circuit loading are checked so the finished job is safe as well as clean-looking. In Dromana, renovated kitchens, open-plan living rooms and darker older homes often benefit from a new lighting layout rather than a simple one-for-one swap. Impulse Electrical is fully licensed — A Grade A53308 and REC 25266 — with $25M public liability and a Certificate of Electrical Safety supplied on every job.
As local Dromana electricians we can usually turn a downlight job around quickly, including whole-house halogen replacements before a sale or a new tenancy. Every fitting is checked for insulation clearance and circuit loading, and the finished layout is tested so the house is brighter, cooler in the ceiling and cheaper to run.
Halogen downlights run hot, need clearance from insulation and are a known fire risk in ceilings with old insulation or timber. Modern LED downlights use a fraction of the power, run cool enough to sit against insulation when rated for it, and last far longer. In the fibro and weatherboard homes near the foreshore we often find transformers and clearance gaps in the insulation that were left when the halogens went in; replacing them with IC-rated LEDs lets the insulation be closed up and the ceiling made safe.
Holiday homes benefit from simple, robust lighting that guests cannot get wrong — good general light in living areas and bedrooms, no fragile fittings. For decks and outdoor areas near the water we use sealed, corrosion-resistant fittings suited to coastal conditions, and we can add sensor or timer control so external lights are not left running all night.

In most cases, yes. Standard-size LED downlights fit the existing cut-outs, so the ceiling is untouched. Where the old fittings were an unusual size we use LEDs with a wider trim to cover the hole cleanly.
IC-rated LED downlights can be covered by insulation. That is a real improvement in older Dromana homes where halogens forced gaps in the ceiling insulation.
Not always. Older dimmers designed for halogens can cause flicker with LEDs. We check the switches and replace dimmers with LED-compatible ones where needed.
It depends on the room size, ceiling height and how it is used. Rather than a one-for-one swap we look at the layout, because a kitchen bench or a reading corner often needs a different spacing to the original halogen grid.
